Distance, certificates and the working week in the UAE

Where a site is hosted is felt here as waiting. A reader in Dubai opening a server on another continent pays for the distance on every round trip, and a page is never one trip: a name looked up, a connection negotiated, a document delivered, then everything that document asks for. The work is on the route rather than the page — an origin near the Gulf, a cache that answers from closer still, an encrypted session resumed instead of rebuilt — and it is measured from a phone on a local network, not the build machine.

A business here can hold more than one name: the .ae, a .com registered years earlier, sometimes an Arabic-script domain that reaches the server as punycode. They belong on one certificate and have to end at a single canonical address in one redirect, not a chain.
